UMAP Australia

Assisting Australian higher education providers and students to participate in student exchanges in Asia and the Pacific

UMAP Australia - Australian National Secretariat of UMAP

This is the webpage of UMAP Australia, the Australian National Secretariat of UMAP (University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific) association.  It is funded and managed by the Australian Government through Australian Education International, the international arm of the Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

UMAP

Australia is one of the founding members of UMAP, a voluntary association of government and non-government representatives of the higher education sector in the Asia-Pacific region, established in 1993.  The association aims to achieve enhanced international understanding through increased cooperation between universities in the Asia-Pacific region, and especially through increased mobility of university students and staff.  More information on UMAP is available further below, or in detail at the official UMAP website.

Australia’s participation in UMAP

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations has been funding Australia’s membership in UMAP since its inception.

For the 2008-09 financial year, the Department provided approximately A$2.9 million to 32 Australian higher education providers, to provide UMAP exchange opportunities for undergraduate Australian students.

Role of UMAP Australia

In support of UMAP aims, the Australian Government has tasked UMAP Australia to:

  • represent Australia in all dealings with UMAP, including UMAP Board meetings and associated sub-committee meetings and the biennial UMAP International Education Conference
  • be the first point of contact for enquiries from the UMAP International Secretariat and other UMAP member countries’ National Secretariats on issues associated with Australian institutions’ participation in UMAP international student exchanges
  • be the first point of contact for enquiries relating to UMAP from the Australian higher education community
  • pay Australia’s annual UMAP membership fee.

Australian UMAP Student Exchange Program

The Australian Government, through the Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, provides subsidies for Australian undergraduate Bachelor degree students to participate in UMAP exchanges.  Through an annual competitive process the Department provides student subsidies under the Australian UMAP Program to Australian higher education institutions that then select students and manage exchange projects.

Detailed information on the Program can be found on the Endeavour Awards website – please see International Student Exchange Programs page.

Are you a student wishing to participate in a UMAP exchange?

Participation in UMAP student exchanges is generally organised by dedicated staff in the International Office of a university.  If you are interested in participating in a UMAP exchange you should contact the international office of your university.  You will need to follow the application procedures in place at your home university.
