UMAP

UMAP is the acronym for the organisation named University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific. UMAP was founded in 1993 and is a voluntary association of government and non-government representatives of the higher education (university) sector in the Asia-Pacific region.

The aim of UMAP

UMAP aims to achieve enhanced international understanding through increased co-operation between universities, and especially through increased mobility of university students and staff.

UMAP members

UMAP membership is open to countries, territories and administrative regions in the Asia-Pacific region. Members may be represented by government higher education departments or ministries, individual universities, university umbrella organisations, or a combination of these. Individual persons are not eligible to be members.

All accredited public and private universities in these countries, territories and administrative regions may participate in the UMAP exchange program.

Other countries, territories and administrative regions may join UMAP with the approval of the governing authority of UMAP, the UMAP Board.

UMAP funds for student or staff exchanges

UMAP as an organisation does not provide funds directly to students. However, some national governments of UMAP member countries do offer financial assistance for students to study as an exchange student in the UMAP program.

In Australia, and on behalf of the Australian Government, the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) provides funds, through a competitive annual process, to Australian higher education providers under the Australian UMAP Student Exchange Program.

UMAP Board, Chair and International Secretariat

The UMAP Board is comprised of all Full Member countries.  The Chair is elected from Full Members for the term of two years.  The Secretary-General and Under Secretary-General are appointed by the UMAP member hosting the UMAP International Secretariat.

The Board meetings are held twice a year, with one meeting in the country/territory of the UMAP Chair, and the other in the country/territory where the UMAP International Secretariat is located.

UMAP International Secretariat has been tasked to:

  • coordinate regional UMAP activities
  • provide an information service on UMAP
  • promote UMAP throughout the Asia-Pacific region
  • administer a range of UMAP programs
  • organise Board meetings and conferences.
