English opens doors to a wide range of study options and international careers. Australia offers students high quality training in an English-speaking country and excellent value. Students from more than 50 countries come to Australia each year to learn English for study, work, travel or personal reasons.
English language training in Australia is provided by accredited English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS). English language tuition is offered by more than 200 accredited and registered colleges located in capital cities and other areas across Australia.
Australia offers safeguards to international students which are unmatched in the world. Ongoing checks and controls by government, educational institutions and professional bodies ensure that standards are maintained.
In Australia, the majority of ELICOS colleges and their courses are accredited by the National ELT Accreditation Scheme Limited (NEAS Australia). NEAS Australia sets standards for class sizes, the professional qualifications of teachers, curriculum, teaching methods and materials. All teachers have specialist qualifications for teaching English as a foreign language. It also requires colleges to assist students with finding accommodation, including homestays, and provide advice on further studies.
NEAS Australia accredited colleges provide an orientation program on arrival, organise social and cultural activities and have a counsellor available to assist with any personal concerns. Other institutions are accredited and registered by state and territory government mechanisms to ensure the quality of their programs and facilities.
All Australian institutions offering courses to international students holding a student visa must be registered on the Australian Government’s Commonwealth Register for Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). This ensures students receive quality services and high levels of ongoing support.
